The Federation of Worker Writers and Community Publishers (FWWCP) was established in 1976 to link and support community-based writing and publishing groups. Fifty years later, participants reflect on the significance of their activism.
A history of the FWWCP
The Federation of Worker Writers and Community Publishers (FWWCP) was a vibrant network linking many diverse working-class writing and publishing groups across the UK. Established in 1976, it supported the work of over 120 groups during the following thirty years.
FWWCP publications
The FWWCP produced thousands of publications over its thirty-year history. A large collection is held at the TUC Library at London Metropolitan University, and a significant number have been digitised by staff and students at Boston College, US.
This oral history project
The Worker Writers and Community Publishers Oral History Project (2025-26) aims to capture key elements of a movement centred on supporting cultural production by working-class people, including new approaches to writing, collective publishing and alternative modes of distribution.
Interviews
We have conducted 25 interviews so far. We found people to interview among our existing contacts and their contacts. Those interviewed were involved in a variety of activities with writing groups and/or publishing projects across England.
